SB103020 is a heavy-duty plier-staple format used primarily for corrugated packaging and industrial carton-closing applications. The relatively wide 1/2-inch crown distributes clamping force across the packaging material while the chisel-point legs penetrate the corrugated board.
The staple family is commonly associated with Bostitch P50 and P51 industrial plier staplers and equivalent systems. Unlike large crown carton-closing staples used by top carton staplers, SB103020 staples are designed for plier-style tools that clinch the staple legs around or through the packaging material.
KYA currently specifies a 12.85mm crown, 2.55mm wire width and 0.55mm thickness. The original Bostitch SB103020 format is commonly described as a nominal 1/2-inch crown with .103" × .020" wire.
Metric and imperial supplier specifications can use slightly different nominal values. When replacing an original fastener or qualifying a new supplier, compare the actual crown, wire width, wire thickness, leg length and strip geometry rather than relying only on the SB103020 name.

| Model | Metric Length | Nominal Inch Length | General Selection |
|---|---|---|---|
| SB103020-10 | 10mm | 3/8" | Thinner corrugated materials and packaging assemblies where a shorter clinched leg is required |
| SB103020-13 | 13mm | 1/2" | Medium-thickness corrugated packaging and general plier-stapling applications |
| SB103020-16 | 16mm | 5/8" | Thicker corrugated assemblies where the tool and material require a longer staple leg |
Staple length should be matched to the total material thickness and clinching requirement. A longer staple is not automatically better because excessive leg length can produce poor clinching or interfere with the packaged product.
The following figures come from KYA's current detailed packing table. Another line in the older page states a generic 2,500 staples per box, which conflicts with these size-specific figures. Confirm final packing on the quotation before ordering.
| Item | Length | Pcs / Stick | Pcs / Box | Boxes / Carton | Cartons / Pallet | Carton G.W. | Pallet G.W. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SB103020-10 | 10mm / 3/8" | 50 | 3,000 | 28 | 30 | 27.55kg | 826.5kg |
| SB103020-13 | 13mm / 1/2" | 50 | 2,800 | 24 | 30 | 26.3kg | 789kg |
| SB103020-16 | 16mm / 5/8" | 50 | 4,500 | 12 | 30 | 24.9kg | 747kg |
The zinc-coated steel surface provides corrosion protection compared with untreated bright steel. Actual corrosion performance depends on coating thickness, humidity, storage conditions and environmental exposure.
The galvanized finish should not be described as suitable for virtually every environment. Where cartons are exposed to prolonged moisture, chemicals or corrosive conditions, confirm the required fastener material and coating specification.
The chisel-point legs are designed to penetrate corrugated board and other compatible packaging materials efficiently. Penetration and clinching quality also depend on tool adjustment, material thickness and clincher condition.
Glue collation keeps the staples aligned in strip form for magazine feeding. Correct strip dimensions and consistent collation are important for reliable feeding in P51-10B and other compatible plier staplers.
Bostitch identifies the P51-10B as an SB103020 Series plier stapler using a nominal 1/2-inch crown and 3/8-inch to 5/8-inch staple length range. This makes the P51-10B the primary tool reference for the KYA SB103020 product family.
| Tool / System | Compatibility Guidance |
|---|---|
| Bostitch P51-10B | Bostitch officially specifies the P51-10B for SB103020 staples with a 1/2" crown and 3/8"–5/8" leg range. |
| Bostitch P50-10B | SB103020 family tool; verify the exact staple length and tool configuration before use. |
| Bostitch P50-10C | Do not assume all SB103020 lengths fit. Bostitch documentation lists this configuration specifically with the shorter 3/8" SB103020 staple. |
| Salco SP50-10B | Listed by KYA and aftermarket cross-reference suppliers as an SB103020-type system; verify the exact crown, wire and length specification before bulk use. |
| PREBENA HF | Commonly listed as a cross-reference staple family to SB103020. Treat as an interchange reference and verify actual fastener dimensions and tool specification. |
SB103020 staples are used for closing and securing corrugated packaging where a plier stapler can reach the material and clinch the staple legs around the board.
Heavy-duty plier staplers are commonly used to assemble or close suitable corrugated produce trays and similar packaging where a strong mechanical closure is required.
SB103020-type staples can be used for compatible pallet-box components, end caps and packaging inserts where the material stack and clinching geometry suit the selected staple length.
Packaging manufacturers can use plier staples for securing selected container inserts and die-cut corrugated components during assembly.
Selected mailing tubes, wine cartons, header cards, bags and specialty packaging components can also use SB103020 staples where the tool can properly penetrate and clinch the material.
Bostitch also lists fabric stapling among P51-10B applications. The appropriate staple length should be selected according to the material stack and required clinch.

| Selection Factor | What to Check |
|---|---|
| Total Material Thickness | The staple legs must pass through the material stack while leaving enough length for proper clinching. |
| Corrugated Flute Structure | Single-wall, double-wall and other board constructions can require different staple lengths. |
| Clincher Geometry | The clincher blade must form the selected staple legs correctly around the material. |
| Tool Model | Confirm the minimum and maximum staple length accepted by the exact plier stapler. |
| Closure Requirement | Select the leg length according to carton construction and required closure performance rather than using the longest staple automatically. |
SB103020 should not be confused with large-crown top carton-closing staples such as 32 Series or 35 Series. SB103020 uses a narrower approximately 1/2-inch crown and is primarily associated with industrial plier staplers.
| Staple Family | General Format | Typical Tool Type |

SB103020 staples are heavy-duty plier staples commonly used for corrugated carton closing and industrial packaging. The format uses an approximately 1/2-inch crown and short 3/8-inch to 5/8-inch legs.
KYA classifies this product as 17 gauge.
KYA lists a 12.85mm crown. The SB103020 system is commonly referred to as a nominal 1/2-inch crown staple.
KYA currently lists approximately 2.55mm width × 0.55mm thickness. Bostitch original SB103020 fasteners are commonly specified as .103" × .020", so dimensional interchange should be verified rather than assumed from the series name alone.
KYA currently lists SB103020-10 at 10mm / 3/8", SB103020-13 at 13mm / 1/2", and SB103020-16 at 16mm / 5/8".
Bostitch officially specifies the P51-10B as an SB103020 Series plier stapler for a nominal 1/2-inch crown and approximately 3/8-inch to 5/8-inch leg lengths. Confirm interchange dimensions when using aftermarket staples.
No blanket compatibility should be stated. Bostitch documentation lists the P50-10C with the shorter 3/8-inch SB103020 staple, so check the exact P50 model before using longer legs.
PREBENA HF is commonly listed as an interchange or cross-reference family for SB103020-type staples. Actual crown and wire dimensions should still be checked before replacing one manufacturer's fastener with another.
Typical applications include corrugated containers, tray boxes, pallet boxes, end caps, container inserts, die-cut inserts, mailing tubes and other industrial packaging. Compatible plier systems can also be used for selected fabric stapling.
The product on this page uses galvanized steel wire with a zinc-plated surface. The coating provides corrosion protection compared with untreated steel, but environmental suitability depends on actual exposure conditions.
They should not be described as universally weatherproof. Galvanizing provides corrosion protection, but prolonged moisture, chemicals or aggressive environments may require a different material or coating specification.
KYA lists a chisel point to support penetration into corrugated board and compatible packaging materials.
Yes. KYA lists these staples as glue collated for strip feeding in compatible plier staplers.
The current KYA detailed packaging table lists 50 staples per strip for SB103020-10, SB103020-13 and SB103020-16.
KYA's detailed table currently lists 3,000 pcs for SB103020-10, 2,800 pcs for SB103020-13 and 4,500 pcs for SB103020-16. Because older page copy also states a generic 2,500 pcs/box, confirm the final packing specification when ordering.
Choose according to the total material thickness, corrugated board construction, tool specification and required clinch. The staple legs must penetrate the material and form correctly against the clincher.
Do not assume compatibility. SB103020 is an industrial plier-staple system with its own crown, wire section and strip geometry. Use only a stapler whose manual specifies SB103020 or matching dimensions.
Contact KYA Fasteners regarding current sample availability. Test the selected length in the actual stapler and packaging material before placing a large-volume order.
