L38 1-1/2" / 38 mm 16 Ga 1,000 10

L-Shaped Head for Tongue-and-Groove Flooring

L-cleats are purpose-designed for nail-down tongue-and-groove wood flooring. During installation, the flooring nailer positions the cleat through the tongue at the required angle so the next flooring board can engage with the groove.

The L-shaped head provides a seating surface while the flooring-cleat body engages with the subfloor. Professional cleat manufacturers use this design for solid hardwood and compatible engineered flooring systems.

Barbed Cleat Profile for Wood Flooring

The formed barbs along the cleat provide mechanical engagement with compatible wood and subfloor materials after the fastener has been driven. This design is commonly used in professional flooring cleats to help secure the installed flooring while still allowing the wood flooring system to respond to normal seasonal movement.

Holding performance depends on the complete installation, including wood species, fastener length, subfloor material, cleat spacing, moisture conditions and flooring manufacturer's requirements.

Recommended Flooring Thickness for 2" L-Cleats

Two-inch 16 gauge L-cleats are commonly used with 5/8" and 3/4" tongue-and-groove hardwood flooring. Some professional cleat systems also list 2" fasteners for thicker flooring profiles.

The correct fastener length should not be selected by flooring thickness alone. The tongue position, flooring construction, subfloor thickness and flooring manufacturer's installation instructions also determine the appropriate cleat length.

Flooring Consideration Selection Guidance
5/8" Hardwood 2" 16GA cleats are supported by several professional flooring-nailer systems; verify flooring profile and subfloor.
3/4" Hardwood A common application for 2" 16GA L-cleats in nail-down tongue-and-groove flooring.
Engineered Flooring Use 16GA L-cleats only when the engineered-flooring manufacturer permits this fastener type and length.
Thin or Very Dense Flooring A thinner cleat may be specified to reduce the risk of tongue damage; follow the flooring manufacturer's instructions.

Typical Hardwood Flooring Applications

  • Oak flooring: nail-down tongue-and-groove installations using compatible 16 gauge flooring nailers.

  • Maple flooring: professional flooring installation where the manufacturer specifies 16 gauge cleats.

  • Walnut flooring: compatible solid hardwood flooring systems.

  • Hickory flooring: use only when the flooring manufacturer permits 16 gauge cleats for the specific product.

  • Other solid hardwood: 5/8", 3/4" and other compatible tongue-and-groove flooring profiles.

  • Selected engineered flooring: only where the flooring construction and manufacturer permit a 16 gauge L-cleat installation.

Freeman 16GA Flooring Nailers Selected Freeman flooring nailers accept 16 gauge L-cleats from 1-1/2" to 2".

Do not select a flooring nail solely by brand name. Confirm 16 gauge L-cleat compatibility, accepted length, strip dimensions and flooring-nailer model before placing a bulk order.

Powernail 45/445 vs. Powernail 50P and 2000F

For this 2" 16 gauge L-cleat, the relevant Powernail platforms are the Model 45 and Model 445. Both are designed for 16 gauge Powercleats in lengths up to 2".

The Powernail 50P uses 18 gauge cleats up to 1-3/4", while the Powernail 2000F uses 20 gauge cleats up to 1-1/4". Those tools should not be listed as compatible with a 2" 16 gauge L-cleat.

16 Gauge vs. 18 Gauge Flooring Cleats

Sixteen gauge L-cleats are widely used for conventional 5/8" and 3/4" nail-down hardwood flooring. Thinner 18 gauge cleats are available for thinner flooring and for selected dense or exotic species where the flooring or tool manufacturer recommends a smaller fastener.

For bamboo, very hard exotic flooring or thinner engineered products, do not assume that a 16 gauge 2" cleat is the correct choice. Follow the flooring manufacturer's installation instructions and select the cleat gauge and length accordingly.

Straight-Strip Collation and Packing

The L-cleats are supplied in straight collated strips for loading into compatible flooring nailers. The current KYA packing information lists 1,000 cleats per box and 10 boxes per carton.

For palletized distributor orders, the current product information lists approximately 45–60 boxes per pallet. Confirm the final carton and pallet configuration when requesting a quotation because export packing can vary by order.

Information for Flooring Fastener Distributors

For quotations, provide the required cleat length, quantity, destination market, flooring thickness, wood type and flooring nailer model. If the cleat will be used with an engineered or specialty flooring product, include the flooring manufacturer's fastening requirements.

The current KYA product information lists an MOQ of 50 boxes and indicates that sample quantities can be arranged. Confirm current MOQ, sample quantity, freight terms and packing when requesting pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size are the KYA L50 flooring cleats?

The L50 is a 2" / approximately 50 mm long, 16 gauge L-shaped flooring cleat.

Are 2" L-cleats suitable for 3/4" hardwood flooring?

Yes. Two-inch 16 gauge L-cleats are commonly used with 3/4" tongue-and-groove hardwood flooring. Confirm the flooring manufacturer's required fastener length and subfloor conditions before installation.

Can 2" L-cleats be used with 5/8" flooring?

Several professional 16 gauge flooring-nailer systems support 2" L-cleats for 5/8" hardwood flooring. Verify the specific flooring profile and manufacturer's installation instructions.

Can these cleats be used with engineered flooring?

Only when the engineered-flooring manufacturer permits 16 gauge L-cleats and the selected 2" length. Engineered flooring varies significantly in thickness and construction.

Are these cleats recommended for bamboo flooring?

Do not assume that a 16 gauge 2" cleat is suitable for every bamboo floor. Some professional flooring-tool manufacturers recommend thinner 18 gauge cleats for dense bamboo and other hard flooring species to reduce the risk of tongue damage.

Will these cleats split oak or other hardwood flooring?

L-cleat geometry is designed for hardwood flooring installation, but no fastener can guarantee that tongue splitting will never occur. Wood species, moisture content, tongue geometry, cleat gauge, tool setup and installation technique all affect the result.

Will these L-cleats fit a Powernail 445?

The Powernail 445 is designed for 16 gauge L-cleats from 1-1/2" to 2", so the 2" L50 falls within its published fastener range.

Will these L-cleats fit a Powernail Model 45?

Yes. The manual Powernail Model 45 is specified for 16 gauge Powercleats from 1-1/2" to 2".

Will these cleats fit a Powernail 2000F?

No. The Powernail 2000F uses 20 gauge flooring cleats in 1" and 1-1/4" lengths, so it is a different fastener platform.

Will these cleats fit a BOSTITCH MFN-201?

The BOSTITCH MFN-201 is specified for 16 gauge L-type flooring cleats in 1-1/2" and 2" lengths, so the L50 size falls within its published range.
