Why Choose the 50mm FST50 Length?

The 50 mm FST50 is useful when the fastener must pass through a thicker attached component before reaching the concrete or masonry substrate. Typical examples include thicker furring strips, wood profiles, selected plywood components and light-gauge construction materials.

A 50 mm nail is not automatically preferable to a shorter FST nail. The correct length depends on the thickness of the attached material, required embedment, substrate density and driving capability of the nailer.

Hardened Steel for Suitable Concrete and Masonry

FST50 nails are manufactured from hardened carbon steel to provide the rigidity required for direct fastening into suitable dense substrates with a compatible concrete finish nailer.

Concrete and masonry vary considerably in hardness and composition. Aggregate, substrate age, compressive strength, edge distance and nailer driving energy all affect installation performance. Test the actual substrate before repetitive fastening.

If the nail bends, fractures, does not seat correctly or causes excessive cracking or spalling, use a different nail length, tool setting or fastening method rather than increasing driving force without evaluation.

1.8mm Shank and 2.8mm Narrow Head

FST50 uses an approximately 1.8 mm shank diameter and 2.8 mm head width. These dimensions are characteristic of the FST concrete finish nail platform and help distinguish it from heavier concrete T-nails and conventional angled woodworking finish nails.

When replacing an existing FST nail, compare the complete fastener geometry including shank diameter, head width, length, strip format and collation before ordering.

Straight Glue-Collated Strips

FST50 nails are supplied in 0° straight glue-collated strips. The current KYA configuration contains 50 nails per strip for use in compatible hardened concrete finish nailers.

This straight-strip format is different from common 15GA angled DA finish nails. Do not load FST50 nails into a conventional angled woodworking finish nailer unless the tool manufacturer specifically identifies the FST fastener format.

Galvanized Finish

The standard FST50 shown on this page uses a galvanized surface finish. The zinc-coated surface provides corrosion protection compared with uncoated hardened carbon steel.

Galvanized FST50 nails should not automatically be treated as suitable for every exterior, coastal or chemically aggressive environment. Fastener material and coating should be selected according to the actual exposure conditions and project requirements.

Typical FST50 Applications

  • Thicker furring strips: selected wood strips where the 50 mm length provides the required reach and substrate embedment.

  • Baseboards and skirting: fastening thicker trim components to suitable concrete, brick or masonry.

  • Wood moulding and profiles: selected finishing applications requiring a longer FST fastener.

  • Plywood and wood components: non-structural wood-to-concrete fastening where the material thickness requires a longer nail.

  • Light-gauge metal track: selected runner and track fastening where the substrate and project specification permit direct hardened-nail fastening.

  • Aluminum profiles: selected moulding and profile attachment to compatible dense substrates.

  • Interior renovation: professional finishing work involving suitable concrete or masonry substrates.

concrete finish nails for furring strips trim wood and light gauge track

FST50 for Thicker Furring Strips

The 50 mm length provides additional reach when fastening thicker furring strips compared with shorter FST25 or FST35 nails. The selected nail still needs sufficient penetration into the receiving substrate after passing through the furring material.

Very hard concrete can make a longer nail more difficult to drive. Test the actual combination of furring material, concrete and nailer before selecting FST50 for repetitive installation.

FST50 for Wood and Plywood to Concrete

FST50 can be used for selected non-structural wood or plywood attachment where a 50 mm hardened finish nail provides appropriate penetration through the wood and into the concrete or masonry substrate.

For load-rated sheathing, structural framing, engineered connections or assemblies subject to specified wind, seismic or structural loads, use the fastening or anchoring system required by the project documentation.

FST50 for Light-Gauge Track and Interior Profiles

FST concrete nail systems are used for selected light-gauge steel stud and runner installations, aluminum moulding and related interior profile fastening to suitable floors and walls.

For thin track or moulding, a shorter FST nail may provide sufficient penetration and easier driving. Select FST50 only where the material thickness and required embedment justify the additional length.

Concrete and Masonry Substrate Testing

Direct fastening performance varies between concrete slabs, masonry blocks and brick substrates. A 50 mm hardened nail should not be assumed to penetrate every substrate simply because the nailer can load it.

Perform trial fastenings away from edges and corners. Confirm that the nail seats correctly and that the substrate does not crack, spall or break before proceeding with repetitive installation.

Compatible FST50 Nailer Platforms

FST50 requires a concrete finish nailer designed for compatible hardened straight-strip fasteners and capable of accepting 50 mm nails. Gauge alone is not sufficient to determine compatibility.

Tool Fit and Application Checks

The product listing names KYA FST50, WOODPECKER FST50 and AIR LOCKER FST50 as compatible platforms. Confirm the exact nailer model, magazine fit and straight-strip dimensions before production use. FST50 is a 15GA hardened straight-strip fastener; gauge alone does not establish compatibility.

FST50 is listed for concrete rated above 5,000 PSI. Concrete mix, aggregate, tool power, embedment and attached material affect driving results. Test the actual substrate and confirm the application is suitable; FST nails are not a substitute for an engineered structural anchor.

The glue-collated strip is described as zero-jam with clean break-away. Feeding performance depends on the nailer and strip fit; use only a compatible FST tool.

A stainless-steel version is listed for coastal projects. Confirm the stainless grade and suitability for the actual marine or corrosive exposure before specifying it.

KYA states that its products meet or exceed ASTM standards and that test reports are available. Ask KYA for the applicable standard number and the FST50 test report for the requested product lot.

>Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the FST50 concrete nail?

FST50 is a 15 gauge hardened concrete finish nail measuring 50 mm / 2 inches long with an approximately 1.8 mm shank and 2.8 mm head width.

What does FST50 mean?

FST identifies the hardened straight-strip concrete finish nail family, while 50 identifies the approximately 50 mm nail length.

Is FST50 the longest KYA FST size on this product range?

Yes. Within the current KYA FST range shown on these product pages, FST50 is the 50 mm / 2" length option.

Is FST50 stronger than every shorter FST nail?

Not necessarily. FST50 provides greater length, but joint performance depends on substrate, embedment, attached material, nail geometry and installation conditions. Longer does not automatically mean stronger.

Why choose FST50 instead of FST25 or FST35?

Choose FST50 when the attached component is thick enough to require additional nail length while still allowing suitable penetration into the receiving substrate. For thinner materials, a shorter FST nail may be easier to drive and more appropriate.

Can FST50 be used in concrete?

Yes, in suitable concrete using a compatible hardened concrete finish nailer. Test the actual substrate because concrete hardness and aggregate affect driving performance.

Can FST50 be used in brick or masonry block?

FST-style hardened nails are used in selected masonry applications, but brick and block vary considerably in density and brittleness. Perform test fastenings before repetitive installation.

Will FST50 penetrate 5,000 PSI concrete?

Do not select FST50 solely from a concrete PSI value. Aggregate, substrate age, tool energy, nail length and installation conditions affect whether the nail can be driven correctly. Test the actual concrete first.

Can FST50 be used for thick furring strips?

Yes, where the 50 mm length provides sufficient reach through the furring material and appropriate embedment into a suitable substrate.

Can FST50 be used for plywood to concrete?

It can be used for selected non-structural wood or plywood attachment where the nail dimensions and substrate are suitable. Structural sheathing or load-rated assemblies may require a specified anchor or other fastening system.

Can FST50 be used for structural framing or truss connections?

FST50 should not be treated as a universal structural anchor. Structural framing and truss connections can require fasteners or anchors with specified load capacities and installation requirements.

Will FST50 fit a JITOOL CS15/50?

JITOOL lists FST50 at 50 mm within the FST fastener family used by its CS15/50 concrete nailer. When using third-party nails, confirm the actual strip and head dimensions before bulk use.
