Staple Material
How to choose the right material for your application

Galvanized staples

Galvanized staples is the most common staple type. The staple is a steel staple that is coated with a layer of zinc to be able to handle general corrosion better. Galvanized staples is comparable in strength and appearance to a stainless steel staple. If you need an all-around staple with a long life expectancy, a galvanized staple could be the right choice for your application.

Copper coated staples

Copper coated staples are one of the best choices when it comes to beautiful clean aesthetics. It is excellent for transport packaging due to it works better than regular steel in non-humidity-controlled environments. Copper coated staples can oxidate faster in situations that are salty, hot, and acidic. It is the go-to staple for carton closing.

Stainless steel staples

Stainless steel staple is for applications that need a higher level of corrosion protection or need to have a higher protection against heat. The standard stainless steel staples are 304 & 316. The 304 stainless steel staple is used for both indoor and outdoor use and protects against corrosion from milder oxidizing acids. The 316 stainless steel staple gives even greater protection against corrosion and is common when the application comes in contact with salty environments.

Aluminum staples

Aluminum staples is excellent for applications that need to avoid magnetism. The corrosion protection is more significant than a galvanized staple but has less corrosion protection than a stainless steel staple. Another great benefit of an aluminum staple is that you can easily cut through it without hurting your tool. Therefore it is widely used by sawmills when cutting trough wood.

Staple Wire
The staples wire dimensions. We divide the staple wires into the following three categories, fine wire, medium wire, and heavy wire — all with their specific uses for different applications.

Wire Guage

Staple wire thickness is measured by its “gauge.” This is a measurement of a wire’s diameter. The system of identifying wire by its diameter was originally developed 1857 to specify electrical wires by their current carrying capacity. Oddly, the higher the number, the thinner the wire. Wire is referred to as heavy, medium, or fine:
Heavy wire is typically 10-16 gauge, and used for the toughest jobs on heavy materials, like roofing or other construction materials. Heavy wire staples are also used for subflooring, framing, and for fixing boxes to pallets.
Medium wire measures 18-19 gauge and might be used for materials thicker than paper, but not as thick as wood or roofing used in construction. They’re good for heavy upholstery, paneling, cabinet construction, sheathing, and siding.
Fine wire measures 20-23 gauge. This is the type of wire you’ll see in a standard office stapler, but fine gauge wire also makes staples for trim, picture frames, furniture framing or assembly, and lighter upholstery. A pneumatic upholstery stapler may use 20 or 22 gauge staples, depending on the materials being fastened together.
Staple wire is also worked to create the point or teeth at the end of the staple legs, usually chisel-shaped for best penetration of materials. Divergent staples have chisel points pointing outward in opposite directions, causing them to splay outward when applied for a better hold.

Staple Point
Chisel point staples
Chisel point staple
The staple point is the first part of the staple coming in contact with the fastening material. The staple points come in various designs, where all are specialized to provide the correct holding power for the application. At KYA FASTENERS, we use the most common design, the chisel point design.
Chisel point staple has the design of the letter V, where the two flat inclined side meets at a sharp angle. The design makes it possible to drive the staple straight into the material to the crown of the staple.
Staple Crown
The staple crown is the top middle part of the staples holding the two legs together. There are three types of crowns (narrow crown staples, medium crown staples, wide crown staples).
narrow crown staples

Narrow crown staples

The narrow crown is the smallest type of crown. It is easy to hide in applications after joining. It covers a smaller area then medium and wide crown staples. Often used for finish and trim and other delicate jobs, but it is also great for wood and panel work. Durable and strong, it is suitable for fastening tongue-and-groove boards, panels, fibreboards and wire mesh, among other things.

Applications:

Molding, Cabinets, Trim, Paneling, Drawers, Upholstery, Giftboxes, Fruitboxes

Our narrow crown staples:

4J, 97, 90, 92 etc.
Medium Crown staples

Medium crown staples

Medium crown staples is as its name the crown type that comes in between narrow and wide crown staples. Used when you need to cover a larger area on your material than narrow crown allows you to do. It has more uses than a narrow crown staple and is often used in home construction.

Applications:

Furniture, Pallet, Crate, Sheathing, Subflooring, Packaging, Bedding

Our medium crown staples:

71, 72, 14, 80, 50, A11, 10J, STCR5019, Q, GS16, BCS4, 14, N, M etc.
Wide crown staples

Wide crown staples

Of all the crown widths, this is the broadest crown type. Wide crown staples have a lot of similar uses as medium crown staples. When esthetics is not as necessary, a wide crown staple is a great choice. It covers a large area then narrow and medium crowns.

Applications:

Carton closing, Packaging

STAPLES FAQ

  • How to choose the correct staple leg length

Getting the right staple length is crucial when deciding which staple you should choose. The thickness or density of the material you are fastening determines what leg length you should use for your application.
  • How to choose the correct staple wire

we talk about the staple wire, we mean the staples wire dimensions. For simplification, we divide the staple wires into the following three categories, fine wire, medium wire, and heavy wire — all with their specific uses for different applications.
  • Can you provide packaging design?

Yes, we can provide professional outer packaging design.
  • What are crown staples used for

Great for roofing felt, house wrap, upholstery, furniture trim, automotive vinyl and trim, picture frames, bedding, furniture frames, molding.
  • What size staples for upholstery

Almost any fine wire and medium wire staples can be used for upholstery.
  • Different types of metal used to make staples

Aluminum: this softer metal is good for staples that shouldn’t attract magnets. They are easy to remove and soft enough to cut without damaging a saw or scissors.
Galvanized steel: steel wire with a coating of zinc resists corrosion. Staples made of galvanized steel can handle humid or damp environments without corroding or rusting. As a result, they tend to last a long time.
Stainless steel: stainless steel staples have higher corrosion and rust resistance than galvanized steel, and they are more protected from heat and have more endurance for salty environments. They also look shiny and modern.
Copper-coated: most often used for closing cardboard cartons, copper-coated wire looks great and handle humid environments well.
Colored wire: standard office staples with a color coating for appearance or color-coding.
  • How to choose the staple you want?

When choosing staples, you must match the type of staple to the tool you are using to the job you’re doing. To do this, you should understand that staple types are defined not just by the type of wire they’re made of, but also by their width and the length of their “legs,” the parts that penetrate the materials you are fastening together.

When selecting a staple, start with the type of work you’re doing and the tools you’ll use, as well as the materials you are fastening together. Make note of any special conditions, such as outdoor exposure to humidity or salt, considerations about the appearance of the result, and the quantity of staples you’ll need to complete the job. If you have questions about which staples match your tool or your project, contact Us for information.
